Debi and Tom Thomas: Building a Legacy Through Strategic Giving

Debi and Tom Thomas exemplify the impact of thoughtful, strategic giving. Through their charitable remainder trust (CRT), they have designated Vail Health as a primary beneficiary, ensuring their commitment to health care continues for generations.

From Personal Experience to Purposeful Action

Health care holds deep personal significance for the Thomases. Tom’s younger brother lived with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, an experience that profoundly shaped his lifelong dedication to supporting medical causes. As the former owner of Union Supply Company, Tom reflects, “You have to be profitable, but in a way that helps people along the way.”

Debi’s connection to Vail began during her college years at the University of Colorado. She later introduced Tom to the area, and today, as part-time residents, they’ve experienced firsthand the exceptional care at Vail Health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, their daughter, Gracey, broke her arm while snowboarding and was treated at the Borgen Family Emergency Department and Trauma Center.

“Access to quality health care is essential,” says Debi. “We’re passionate about supporting the community and are just getting started in Vail.”

A Commitment Built to Last

The Thomases have a long history of giving back. In California and Texas, they support multiple hospitals and medical research focused on cancer and Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Tom also embedded social impact into his business, employing individuals with disabilities and creating re-entry programs for formerly incarcerated people.

Their CRT, initially established for tax planning in California, now serves a dual purpose: providing lifetime income and sustaining their philanthropic legacy. The trust supports research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy in honor of Tom’s brother, as well as the mission of Vail Health.
