Mara and Rich Weissmann: Investing in Mental Health

This story first appeared in the 2024 Annual Update >

“We feel a strong obligation to give back, and we’re fortunate to be able to do so,” said Rich Weissmann.

Community Connection

Mara and Rich Weissmann are passionate about community health. Inspired by the collaborative nature of Vail Health’s providers and partners, their generous gift to the Vail Health Behavioral Health Innovation Center (BHIC) will help support behavioral health research.

The couple has been in the Vail Valley since 2006, splitting time between here and the East Coast. After several winters visiting, the Weissmanns considered purchasing a Vail home. “Both of our fathers said that if this is a place where you want to create memories with your family, you should do it,” remembered Mara.

Since joining our community, they have been focused on philanthropy on both sides of the country. “It’s really important to us that our kids see us committing to this work,” said Mara.

Behavioral Health is Community Health

Mara’s late father, a nephrologist, was committed to patient education and healthy lifestyles. The Weissmanns are carrying on his legacy and enjoy supporting smaller medical institutions. In addition to giving locally, they have a long history of philanthropy at Dartmouth, which includes funding community education around cancer prevention.

Introduced to the Vail Health Foundation by longtime friends Mary Sue and Mike Shannon, the Weissmanns’ donation to support behavioral health research is motivated by their dedication to the Vail community, as well as their knowledge about the importance of behavioral health and innovating care. Mara and Rich are impressed with BHIC’s commitment to treating community members while developing cutting-edge care. “We can see tangible aspects of our philanthropy right here in the community,” said Rich.

Mara added, “I think in one way or another, everyone has been touched by mental health in some way—and we’re no different. The work that Vail Health is doing in behavioral health is essential.”

The Weissmanns are also committed to their personal health and behavioral health, knowing there’s no distinction between the two. Mara swims and loves to hike, cook, and entertain. Rich stays active during the winter skinning, skiing, and snowboarding, while spending his summers sailing and training for triathlons. They also spend a lot of time with friends and family. “We love the Valley for all it offers—skiing, hiking, the arts, and of course, community,” smiled Mara.
