“When you have healthy people and healthy families, it creates a healthy community,” says Karen Maxwell.
Karen and John Maxwell were drawn to the Vail Valley for more than its natural beauty. The couple, who met at the University of Kentucky, found a vibrant community that matched their love for both outdoor recreation and cultural experiences.
Their journey with Vail Health and our partners evolved through personal experiences and their growing connection to the community. As they learned more about the comprehensive services available—from Shaw Cancer Center to the Steadman Clinic and Eagle Valley Behavioral Health—they recognized the health care system’s vital role in serving everyone throughout the region.
The Maxwells believe in giving back to causes that make a difference. They decided to invest in the health and wellness of the community through a blended gift—a cash contribution and an estate gift—to support Vail Health’s efforts in behavioral health and population health. This gift reflects their thoughtful approach to philanthropy.
“Mental health seems like such a crisis these days,” says John. “Hopefully, our contribution can help make that better for everyone.” Karen adds, “When you have healthy people and healthy families, it creates a healthy community.”
A Commitment to Philanthropy
The couple’s commitment to giving back is a value they’ve actively passed on to their two daughters. When their children were young, Karen started a family tradition of charitable giving, making it a Christmas ritual to shop for families in need. Today, both daughters carry that spirit of philanthropy in their communities.
“We’ve been very fortunate and healthy,” Karen reflects. “We’re very grateful to the people who have helped us along the way, and we would like to pay it forward to help others.”
The Maxwells appreciate how Vail Health serves the diverse needs of both residents and visitors. Their generous gift will help ensure that comprehensive health care remains accessible to everyone in the community they love.
