Dr. Chuck Raison: Ancient Practices & Conscious Experience

On a fascinating episode of the Mind & Life Podcast, Dr. Charles Raison, Director of Vail Health Behavioral Health Innovation Center (BHIC), discusses his work on understanding how ancient practices can change our conscious experience. This conversation covers many topics, including how Dr. Raison came to explore psychedelics as a novel treatment for depression (33:25), body temperature and emotions (48:30), and the innovative studies being conducted at BHIC thanks to philanthropic support from Mike and Mary Sue Shannon (54:30).

Dr. Raison is a leader in studying the links between inflammation, stress, and depression, and how meditation and other practices can influence those dynamics. He recently received the 2024 Distinguished Psychiatrist Lecturer Award from the UCLA Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Unlocking the Mysteries of Consciousness

Join us for an enlightening talk by neuroscientist and pioneer of consciousness research, Christof Koch, PhD. During this discussion, he will explore transformative experiences such as mystical encounters, near-death experiences, and psychedelic journeys. These rare events can lead to profound and permanent changes in an individual’s attitudes, beliefs, and habits, offering therapeutic benefits for various clinical conditions, including depression.

Understanding these experiences is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the mind and brain. This will be a central focus of the research on psychedelic medicines as a novel treatment for depression being studied at the Vail Health Behavioral Health Innovation Center.
