Advanced Ultrasound Technology Standardizes Emergency Care

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a state-of-the-art diagnostic tool used for bedside examinations that aids clinical decision-making. Recognized as a best practice in emergency departments, POCUS ensures patients receive timely, accurate care when it matters most.

This technology is particularly critical during trauma activations, when emergency physicians and trauma surgeons use it to perform rapid bedside assessments. Nurses and EMTs use the equipment for ultrasound-guided IV placement, particularly for difficult IV insertions, thereby improving patient comfort and reducing procedural complications.

Previously, Beaver Creek Medical Center utilized an outdated machine, resulting in inconsistencies in care between this location and Vail Health Hospital. Through philanthropic support, Vail Health acquired a new POCUS machine for The Borgen Family Emergency Department and Trauma Center, relocating its existing ultrasound to Beaver Creek Medical Center.

This strategic upgrade enables Vail Health to standardize physician practices across both emergency departments, strengthening the ability of our physicians to provide consistent, high-quality emergency care throughout the valley.
