Spirit of Survival Fueled by Philanthropy

Many Shaw Cancer Center patients and survivors find solace and camaraderie through Skimotherapy, a day on the slopes with others navigating cancer. Skimotherapy is one of many cherished events and services offered through Shaw’s Spirit of Survival program.
Erin Perejda, Clinical Social Worker and Supportive Care Services Manager, describes what makes Shaw’s holistic approach to care distinctive. “Spirit of Survival offers an intentional and unique opportunity for our patients to create a community of support. While a diagnosis of cancer is at the core of what brings these people together, it is their love of nature, experiences, and human connection that creates the lasting bond through the program’s monthly offerings.”
Spirit of Survival is entirely supported by philanthropy. Thanks to the generosity of individual benefactors and funds raised through the annual Hike, Wine & Dine event, the program provided 5,426 interactions in 2025, at no cost to patients.

Patients most often turn to social work, counseling, fitness, and nutrition services through Spirit of Survival. Others value the community and resilience built through shared events. Alternative therapies such as massage and acupuncture are also offered as part of the program’s commitment to treating the body, mind, and spirit. Patient resource navigation helps ease financial challenges that may arise from a cancer diagnosis.
Generous contributions recently funded a specialized Tongue Drum for sound healing sessions at Jack’s Place, a cancer caring house. While receiving treatment at Shaw, many out-of-town patients and their caregivers find a comfortable respite at Jack’s Place, which offers lodging with a pay-what-you-can philosophy. In addition to the 12 guest rooms, there are rooms dedicated to massage, meditation, yoga, nutrition classes, acupuncture, and more. Jack’s Place is also made possible through philanthropic support.
