Artificial Intelligence Enhances Clinical Efficiency

This article first appeared in the 2025 Annual Update >

Vail Health integrated artificial intelligence (AI) into clinical practices using Dragon Ambient Experience (DAX) Copilot. This technology streamlines workflows and reduces administrative tasks for providers.

Using AI, DAX Copilot captures essential patient data during visits and automatically organizes it into customizable clinical notes, ensuring all necessary elements for billing and coding are included without sacrificing quality or speed. This capability enables clinicians to complete documentation before leaving for the day, improving work-life balance while enhancing the quality of patient interactions.

Clinicians across the system have described the technology as transformative, with one calling it “a life changer” and another highlighting how it has become an essential part of their workflow. The tool’s versatility has also impressed users; one provider praised its ability to translate Spanish conversations into English clinical notes, calling the feature “incredible.”

“DAX Copilot has allowed me to get the most difficult parts of my notes done quickly,” said Dr. Janet Engle, a Vail Health pediatrician. “I’m amazed at how it can capture the most relevant data for the visit and organize the advice I’m giving throughout an encounter into a concise summary.”

With at least 44 enrolled users and 12,004 encounters across six clinical areas, the impact has been significant.

The program was funded by a generous gift from Michelle and Craig Taylor through their family foundation.
